Role of β-secretase in Alzheimer’s disease and amyloidogenic and non-amyloidogenic pathways. In non-amyloidogenic pathway, cleavage of APP sequentially by α- and γ-secretase produces sAPPα and soluble P3, respectively. On the other hand, in amyloidogenic pathway, β-and γ-secretase produces sAPPβ and insoluble Aβ protein, respectively, leading to the formation of β amyloid plaques. Matured APP and β-secretase are transported to the plasma membrane by Golgi body. A portion of APP is degraded by lysosome
