The vicious cycle: The phagocytic cells produce ROS via oxidative burst mechanism which damages the highly susceptible G-rich telomeric region DNA damage response (DDR) which activates p53 that represses PGC-1α which in turn leads to mitochondrial dysfunction and ultimately leads to ROS imbalance. The cGAS/STING pathway activates NF-κB pathway along with DDR. The ATM/c-ABL DNA damage pathway is also activated which recruits YAP1, a transcriptional coactivator, involved in the expression of pro-IL-18 to the nucleus
